I Love Tiesto - US House Star Confesses

West Coast underground house icon Hipp-E chatted to Skrufff this week about his recent experience of warming up for Tiesto and revealed that he’d been fully won over by the Dutch superstar DJ’s dazzling display.

“Tiesto is a real presence, it’s like watching a rock show when you see him and I think that’s what the kids really enjoy,” he mused.

“Most of us DJs get so chilled and stay behind the decks, featuring the music whereas he is the main feature of the show, and the music is just this pounding soundtrack. To be honest I am impressed at the success of what he has done,” he added, “And you have to respect that.”

Hipp-E’s own performance also went down surprisingly well, he claimed, despite him playing a techno and minimal style set to the army of adoring trance fans.

“I later found out from the promoter that people were into my set, and there were some great moments, but it was a tough crowd to say the least,” he added, “But the crowd was there for Tiesto, and by the time my two hours were up, I was as well.”

The Denver raised nowadays San Francisco based DJ started his career in 1989, aged 16, teaming up with Halo soon after to become a DJ duo and production team (recording as H Foundation on Soma) splitting amicably more recently with Hipp-E retaining the name. He’s also now releasing under his own name for Slip N Slide (who release Sunshine in February) and continues to DJ prolifically in both Europe and the States, putting relentless effort into retaining his profile.

“Gig bookings will always go up and down though I think these days you definitely need to be doing more to stay on the circuit,” he said.

“I have a lot of friends sitting at home on a lot of Saturday nights who are good DJs so there is something to be said about what that means for the scene. But as with anything, you get out of it what you put into it, and I have always had great friendships with the people I work with. So even during slow times, I’ve got my tried and true people that I love to play for and work with,” he added.

“There is an advantage to be able to promote yourself via your productions. People tend to appreciate when a producer they like ends up being a decent DJ as well,” he laughed.

Sessions - Mixed By Fedde Le Grand [news]

N-Trance news for last half-an-year:
We’ve been a bit busy this month putting the final touches to The Freeloaders debut album, but after that we’re going to finish of the previously uncompleted album The Mind Of The Machine. We’ll probably do a limited run of CD’s that you can buy either direct from our website or AATW’s, but will also be available as a download. It will only feature vocals by members of N-Trance between 1996-1998. After this has been done we’re starting a new N-Trance album from scratch, and the old songs that we released that weren’t on any previous albums won’t be included. I’ve no idea how long this album will take to make, but I’m going to write it all in one go and then pick the tracks to release as singles when it’s finished. I have a feeling the album will be a bit darker than usual, and I’m tempted to go back to my roots and do a big beat piano style album.
For any of you that still didn’t know... N-Trance also produce under the pseudonym Freeloaders, and their debut album Freshly Squeezed is now available to download exclusively on iTunes. We will also be finishing off the previously unreleased album Mind Of The Machine, and will be releasing this as well exclusively as a download later this year.

Superstar DJs facing extinction?

US journalist Jean Carey labelled Paul van Dyk, Fatboy Slim, Tiesto and Paul Oakenfold a "cold-blooded cadre of dinosaur DJs" this week and suggested they face a "looming extinction".

"Suddenly, in 2006, like dinosaurs shuddering in the freezing contrail of passing comet, the time of the superstar DJs ended," she wrote in a widely syndicated article headlined "2006 — the Year the Superstar DJ Died".

"Today, the big boys are gasping for space as overpaid nightclub hosts, while small, furry mammals named Busdriver, Ellen Alien, and Otto Von Schirach have sprung forth to occupy their musical niche in the ecosystem".

The influential writer also listed Judge Jules in her list of under-threat DJs though Jules himself was supremely indifferent.

"There’s not really anything I can say in general on this one, except that some DJs have remained relevant, others haven’t," he mused.

"It’s a bit like the music scene," Jules added. "Some bands disappear without trace once their heyday is over, whilst others travel on a path of continual reinvention. DJs are no different," he told Skrufff.

Pacha global brand director Danny Whittle was less sympathetic, however, telling Skrufff: "I think that’s bulls**t, to be honest, it’s like when the press say Ibiza is finished or dance music is dead".

"The DJs, like the press, don’t really control their own careers, the punters do and as long as there are punters supporting them, they will get work," Danny pointed out.

"This is just another example of the press trying to be predictive and getting it totally wrong. The reality is that there will always be superstar DJs who fill clubs and because of that get big fees. The names may change but they will still be there," he added.
