Armand Van Helden releases Ghettoblaster

Armand Van Helden releases his sixth artist album ‘Ghettoblaster’ in May.

“I don’t get a kick out of minimal techno. I don’t want my music to be intelligent,” says Van Helden, the New York house producer whose MySpace friends seem to be selected according to the shape of their derrieres. “I like making sex records.”

‘Ghettoblaster’ breaks with the electro-rock influences of his previous release ‘Nympho’ (2005), or as Van Helden explains: “I was going for a retro throwback 1985-89 soul uptempo urban type sound. Chicago meets Miami meets New York City kind of thing. Or to put it differently, house meets freestyle meets hip-house meets club meets new wave.” So now you know just where to find it in the store. This time around, guests include rappers Fat Joe and Will ‘Tha Wiz’ Lemay, Kudu, George Llanes, as well as vocalists Nicole Roux, Majida.

The first single from the album, “Touch Your Toes” featuring Fat Joe, is out now on vinyl and backed by remixes from Serge Santiago and The Audio, er, Bootys.

Party Ad On MySpace Ends In £20000 Repair For Home [news]

Some 200 teenagers, invited to a party by a girl at her family home through a notification on social networking site MySpace on Easter Monday, wrecked her home causing damages worth 20,000 pounds and inconveniencing neighbors.

The 17-year-old girl, a sixth former, had put up an advertisement on MySpace for her Skins-themed party, prompted by a British television serial on promiscuous teenagers into drugs and drinks, while her parents were away on a holiday. She had expected some 30 to 40 people, but 200 teens invaded the house at Woodstone Village, in Durham, northern England, some of them even from faraway places like London, equipped with cases and cases of drinks.

When her parents returned the next day, the whole house was in total disarray, with bucketfuls of vomit, empty liquor bottles and cigarette butts and extensive damages to furniture and fittings.
According to reports, worried neighbors had called the police as the drunken youths created havoc in the area through the Monday-Tuesday night. The Durham police are now investigating the entire incident.

Berlin B Parade Replaces Loveparade (July 22)

Berlin authorities have approved a license to the Berliner Dance Parade (B Parade) for Saturday July 22, just weeks after Love Parade owner Rainer Schalle announced he was seeking other locations due to bureaucratic delay.

The new Parade will be remarkably similar to previous Loveparades with 55 floats driving between Ernst-Reuter Platz and the Brandenburger Tor, though won’t involve Love Parade founder Dr Motte who angrily told Skrufff he doesn’t even know the people involved.

Skrufff man-in-Berlin Mark Reeder (a long-time friend of Motte’s) was sympathetic, saying ‘I’m not at all surprised at Motte’s reaction’.

“It’s only rock n roll – that’s how nasty this nasty business is. You have a good idea, present it to the world, have some success and it eventually gets hi-jacked by others and warped into something you never wanted or intended it to be.”

“But having said that, the B parade is not going to be anything like the Loveparade - and I have no idea what they even intend to do,” Mark continued, “Yet regardless, I’m sure the clubs, hotels, restaurants and travel companies/tourist board and tax office etc are happy about it happening,” he said.

The Oldest DJ Arrived At His 90th Anniversary [news]

The veteran Ron Diggins, the first DJ in the world, had his 90th anniversary last week. Boston based DJ is considered by many the first person who really start everything, Ananova informs.


Ron Diggins made the first DJ console in 1949, customized by his own craft. Ron is a professional radio engineer and created a buzz with his first sound system called “Diggola”: two decks, a sound mixer, lights, microphone, amplifier and 10 speakers.

Ron retired in 1995, when he had already played to 20.000 parties, comfortably making him the world's most experienced DJ. And what does the great man think of today's millionaire superstar DJs, who earn up to £20,000 for a single night's work? "I never knew how it would take off," he said, shaking his head. "The most I've ever charged is £50."

Luke Slater Lashes Jeans And T Shirt DJs

British techno type Luke Slater defended his decision to wear lipstick and eye shadow on his recent press shots for his Fabric compilation this week, telling Ibiza Voice his mates were fully supportive of his efforts.

"They can handle it because they know I'm a bit weird like that. And why shouldn't a man wear lipstick, anyway? What's wrong with that? I think there should be more lipstick in the world," he said.

The newly flamboyant performer said he's keen to bring more art and fashion into dance music and poked fun at his less image conscious peers.

"There's always this thing about underground techno, that the people who make it shouldn't be seen, it should be very underground – it should all be very jeans and T-shirts," he complained.

Apple, EMI Announce DRM Free Music

EMI has become the first major record label to ditch digital rights management and start selling music online in CD quality and without copy protection.

In a deal struck with Apple’s iTunes Music Store, EMI said it is making available “superior quality audio” across its entire digital catalogue.

The DRM-free tracks would be available first through iTunes but will subsequently be rolled out across other retail services.
